You'll Come A-Drinkin Matilda, With Me
Plainly stated, the Aussies take their beer seriously. Though perhaps their most internationally known export, Foster's isn't the best choice to exemplify the brews from down under, the 12th largest economy in the world places a great deal of emphasis on the role of quality beer in the marketplace. The country's love for beer (especially lagers) puts it among the top per consumers of beer in the world both as a nation and per capita. The Aussies prefer their heavier beer with 71% of sales going towards full strength beer, and less than 10% involving light beers. They also promote microbreweries, even within government. Australian breweries producing less than 30,000 litres of beer each year receive a 60% rebate on their exise taxes. The Cascade Brewery is Australia's oldest, having been established in 1824. The Fosters brothers established their (as far as the Aussies call it) "infamous" Lager brewery (the first of its kind to use refrigeration in Australia) in 1887. Lager itself was later produced in Australia for the first time two years later.Today, brewers and consumers in Australia share very strong mutual bonds. Brand loyalty towards local brewers such as Carlton and United and Tooheys Brewery (owned by Lion Nathan remains strong in local municipalities. Stouts and other dark beers are produced, albeit in much smaller proportions than that of lagers. Still, despite a rather lager heavy market, Aussies love their beer (they are eighth in the world in terms of beer consumption per capita).
Cheers Mate.
